Officer Edith leaves SF Animal Care & Control after 21 years
Edith, the wildly popular Twitter Local Officer, the SF Animal Care & Control officer who ruled Twitter for nearly seven years, is leaving the organization. But she does not give up the Twitter account and will always tweet!
Every San Franciscan on Twitter has a favorite Officer Edith story. Was it the moment she mastered a a wild turkey terrorizes Alamo Square? The time she saved 40 rabbits than an asshole advertised as “pets or meat” on Craigslist? His encounters with Darken the proteges of the Blackbird? The turtle eating mango and worm salad the day Trump lost the White House?
I have been an animal control officer for 20 years and at the ACC for 21 years. it’s time for me to hang up my green outfit and go do something a little less…everything.

Friends, get ready to cry into your Kevlar gloves. Officer Edith, whose real name is Lt. Eleanor Sadler, announced on Twitter on Friday that she was leaving SF Animal Care & Control after 21 years. It’s his last week of work.
Still, she will apparently continue to tweet from the account, albeit elsewhere across the country! “Officer Edith will remain alive and active with another [animal care officer] make the post,” she says later in the above thread. “Remarkably, my manager here wants me to keep access and post my nonsense stories when I think of them. I think I’ll sign them OGOE, so you’ll know it’s me. (Presumably, “OGOE stands for “OG Officer Edith”.)
Her tweetstorm farewell thread is remarkable and worth reading. “We are paid so little given the breadth and expertise we have,” she notes. “We draft and execute search warrants and arrest warrants, conduct thorough investigations and build cases for district attorneys.”
“They call us murderers, they threaten us, they attack us,” she adds. “We deal with the same people as the police, but we do it unarmed and alone. We do all of this because we are the only voice these animals have and we are determined to help them be heard.
“We pack up and move across the country to Annapolis, Maryland, on some kind of whim,” she says. “I’ll update you whenever I see something fun on my 3000 mile journey. I love you all.”
Lieutenant Sadler is not, in fact, Officer Edith. Officer Edith is the green parrot that appears on his Twitter avatar. So there will be a new Officer Edith managing the Twitter account, with the old Officer Edith still posting on the Twitter account, and neither of them will actually be Officer Edith. But everyone will always follow the narrative and wish Lieutenant Sadler well in his continued animal adventures.
