Hollister Police Animal Care and Services investigates abandoned animal case

The dog was euthanized on veterinary recommendation.

Hollister Police Animal Care Services announced that it discovered an injured Chihuahua-type dog at around 6:17 a.m. Sept. 19 that had been left in the after-hours animal shelter kennels. The statement said the dog was immediately transported to a local veterinarian for treatment.

“Upon investigation, it was discovered that the dog was potentially abandoned,” the statement said. “Due to the animal’s condition and under veterinary recommendation, it has been euthanized.”

Hollister Animal Care and Services said it is investigating why this dog was left in the kennels after hours and allowed to suffer through the night without proper medical attention. He added that anyone who allows an animal to be in any building, enclosure, lane, street, plaza or lot of any city, county or judicial district without proper care and attention is guilty of a misdemeanor.

“Hollister Animal Shelter would like to remind the public that it is illegal to abandon an animal belonging to the shelter because it violates PC 597s(a),” the statement read. “If you wish to return an animal, you may do so during business hours at your corresponding county animal care facility.

Hollister Animal Shelter would also like to remind the public that it is illegal to leave an animal unattended as it violates PC 597.1(a).

The release says stray admission forms are available and must be completed by the locator of a stray animal found in San Benito County before placing the animal in the overnight kennels.
