Elanco Animal Health Incorporated: Animal agriculture accepts the challenge of being a solution to climate change while meeting global nutritional needs

22 companies from 6 countries through animal production ask for a seat at the global table on climate change

Today, more than 20 global leaders from one of the world’s largest industries, animal agriculture, announced their intention to address the interconnected and pressing challenges of climate change and hunger. The signatories represent the global production of meat, milk, fish and eggs, demonstrating their potential impact in the fight against climate change and hunger.

With only nine years to reduce emissions or see irreversible damage to the planet and 30% – 2.3 billion – of the world’s population without year-round access to adequate nutrition, the commitment of these major producers food has never been more important. The signatories are developing their plans to focus on four key areas where progress is needed to help meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030: measurement, innovation, market creation and communication.

This commitment follows the event of September 14, Sustainable Solutions for Zero Hunger by 2030: Forum on a Vision for Animal Agriculture. Held ahead of the United Nations Food Systems Summit, more than 600 global business leaders, policy makers and key opinion leaders from 25 countries gathered to accelerate existing efforts to shift animal production towards climate neutrality .

“Our world is facing the converging global challenges of hunger and climate change, and we have little time left to cut emissions and reduce the damage to our planet,” said Jeff Simmons, President and CEO of ‘Elanco. “At the same time, two in three people eat poorly, leading to problems ranging from hunger and malnutrition to obesity. These problems require urgent solutions, and there is no margin for error in the way we respond. This is why we have brought our clients together in a quick and long term effort to help solve these challenges. We see the ability of animals to feed the world while cooling the climate and ushering in a clear era of opportunity for the industry, which will have an impact in this decade. ”

While all industries have their part to play, animal agriculture is uniquely positioned to make change now. The ephemeral nature of methane1 in the atmosphere offers animal agriculture the opportunity to have an impact and slow the global rate of warming. If cattle ranchers can reduce methane emissions by just a third, it can slow the global rate of warming, creating a cooling effect, making meat and milk climate neutral.2 and give the world more time to tackle the more complex and long-term challenges of CO2.

Industry commitments focus on meeting the growing demand for meat, milk, fish and eggs in a way that benefits the environment, human health and nutrition, and the well-being of people. animals and food affordability. Many farmers and ranchers have already risen to the challenge by implementing new technologies and processes to modernize farming practices and create more food with fewer resources.
